Want to Spend Less Money?Consider Lab-grown Pink Diamonds

A pick diamond is a perfect symbol of love and adulation, but natural pick diamonds are some of the most expensive gems on the planet. Thankfully, innovations in technology are bringing these pink rare gems within reach to those without a fortune to splash on their jewelry.

Pink diamonds are one of the most exclusive rarities on the planet, a dazzling epitome of beauty hardly found anywhere. There’s roughly just 1 carat of colored diamonds for every million carats of white diamond, and pink diamonds make up just 1% of those (carat here refers to the measure of a diamond’s weight, not the karat used to describe the purity of gold. 1 carat = 0.2 grams, or the weight of an office pin.)

Pink diamonds combine intense crystal energy with an enchanting feminine touch. It’s no wonder the price of mined pink diamonds range anywhere from $50,000+ per carat.

But are pink diamonds exclusive to the ultra wealthy class? Absolutely not. In this guide, we’ll take a quick look at what lab-made pink diamonds might have to offer low budget shoppers.

What Gives a Pink Diamond its Color?

The way in which pink diamonds get their color is just another one of their rare attributes. Unlike most other colored diamonds, pink diamonds do not get their colors from impurities. Yellow diamonds are yellow from the presence of nitrogen, which has an extra electron that absorbs blue light, leaving just red and green in the spectrum, which results in a yellow shade.

In the same vein, boron in blue diamonds absorb red light owing to a shortfall of electrons, creating a blue shade.

With no trace of impurities to point to, the source of a pink diamond’s color baffled experts for a long time. It was later discovered after extensive research that pink diamonds are exposed to incredibly high pressure – 10x those associated with white diamonds, often from seismic activities (earthquakes, abrupt tectonic shifts, etc.), or hotly intense volcanic activities. The astounding pressure creates an alternating band of particles at the atomic level in addition to regular bands found in white diamonds. This dual crystal structure is dubbed ‘the twin planes’. When light bounces off at the intersection between the planes, the green wavelength is lost, leaving behind a deep pink accent, an epitome of beauty and truly a sight to behold.

Pink diamonds are roughly grouped into multiple categories depending on the depth of the pink and any accompanying color shade.

How are Lab Pink Diamonds Created?

There are many technologies for creating pink diamonds in laboratories, each with varying quality of outputs. The most common is the combination of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) – a technique that replicates the extremely low pressure and low temperature of outer space (diamonds grow a lot in outer space) – with irradiation to create crystal structures that give off various shades of pink. Another common technique is the exact opposite of the CVD. It uses a high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) environment to form crystals that give rise to pink diamonds.

These techniques produce high-quality exotic stones that match their mined counterparts in nearly every respect. There are no coatings or colorants – the pink glow emanates naturally. Lab-made pink diamonds can pass any diamond test by 100%.

Lab-Made Pink Diamonds are Ethically- and Eco-consciously Sourced

Both CVD- and HPHT-based lab-made diamond techniques are far much more energy efficient compared to the processes involved in extracting natural diamonds from the earth’s crust. Plus, the ethical issues relating to the source of the diamond are completely ruled out. As such, lab-made diamonds offer a more attractive option to environmentally-conscious buyers compared to mined diamonds.

And since they’re easily made in the labs, far away from questionable sources, with a much smaller carbon footprint and quicker turnaround, lab pink diamonds come in at a far much lower price compared to natural diamonds.

How Much Do Lab-Grown Pink Diamonds Cost?

Given their rarity, any noticeable shade of pink can boost the value of a diamond significantly. The deeper the shade (or ‘fancies’ as it’s fondly called), the higher the price. Natural pink diamonds easily command anywhere from $60,000 per 0.5carat and above at jewelry specialists. However, you can get lab-grown pink diamonds for just a few $1000 per ounce, and they’re usually just as good. That means that at a fraction of the price of natural diamonds, you can get a bigger, brighter, and more attractive stone. The quality is remarkable and very distinct from similar stones like pink sapphires and rubles.

It’s no wonder they’re increasingly becoming the choice diamond engagement rings for couples looking to make their next big move and jewelry enthusiasts keen on making more ethically conscious choices.

Plus, lab-made pink diamonds are as sturdy and durable as their natural counterparts. They compare head-to-head in nearly every regard. They have no coatings or coloring, and will most likely retain their gleam for like forever without maintenance requirements
